JAPANESE SUICIDE BOAT ATTACK

Date of Revision: January 30, 2001
At 0420 on April 9, 1945, the USS Starr was hit on the starboard
side by a Japanese suicide boat. Four men aboard the Starr were
injured and a hole was put in the side of the ship.
The two Japanese occupants of the boat were killed.

The most likely reason for the attack was that the Starr was loading
empty shell casings; Japanese spotters probably thought it to be
live ammunition.

"The Karama Islands off Okinawa's southwest coast were quickly taken by troops of the 77th Div. The conquest of this group resulted in the capture of more than 300 suicide boats, which were designed to ram American ships."
