I just learned that Commander "Capt." Moody passed away on March 29, 2013.  I am glad that I met him a few times and corresponded about Starr matters over the years.  He will be missed.

It is with great sadness that I must say that my father has now joined the Eternal Watch.  I will miss him greatly, but I know he is now happier, together again with the love of his life, my mom.

It is with great sadness that I tell of the passing of my mother, Pat Duvernay, wife of John Duvernay, signalman on the USS Starr.  It was due to heart failure at around 6:30 a.m. December 27, 2012.  She is loved and will greatly be missed by all.

Paul K's Granddaughter wrote:

Hi all,

I am Paul Keller's granddaughter. I was recently sorting through several boxes of pictures and papers that were my grandpa's. Among family items I found a stack of papers that were Paul's from his days on the Starr. These included an original itinerary, the program from the 1st birthday of the Starr, a press release of the Starr's accomplishments, and some pictures of the crew in formation on the deck. I don't know when the pictures were taken but on the back they are stamped not for publication.

The papers are all very yellow and the type is hard to read in spots. I am planning on making a copy of these for myself and my family. I am trying to find out if there is anywhere that I can donate these papers to that would keep them safe and possibly displayed.

I would gladly keep these treasures for myself and my family, but I feel they deserve to be shared to honor the past and passed on to the next generation so no one forgets.

Is there anyone in particular to contact who could help me with this?

Thank you for any help anyone can give,
Risha (Keller) DeLawter

Hi Risha,

Sorry for not replying earlier, but I haven't been on recently.

The Starr used to have a very active association, but as the numbers have dwindled, so has the activity.  For the time being, I would recommend hanging onto the items from your grandfather.  However, if you would like to post photos here of what you have, I am sure others would find them very interesting.  Thanks!

After the war, Gordon Zirkle (my uncle) became a Lutheran Minister and has lived in Virginia all of his life.  He is now in a nursing home in southern Virginia and, sadly, is not doing well.   He has proudly displayed a large, framed, photo of the USS Starr in his room throughout his stay in the nursing home.  Are there any other survivors out there?

Welcome, Betty!  I'll be sure to ask my dad if he remembers your uncle.  My dad is also in a nursing home (in northern Michigan), but he still has vivid memories about the Starr.  Until about a year ago, we had a regular newsletter going out, which my mom and I co-edited; you can find past issues of it on this board in digital form (http://www.ussstarr.org/punbb/viewforum.php?id=6).  There are still many crew members around, but the numbers are dwindling year by year...

I received your request to remain.  I wish to remain.

I'm going to send some scans by tomorrow.

sduncan

Thanks, Steve.  The pdf files are very interesting.  My dad took several photos in Tsingtao and had some really interesting stories.  I'll post them in a separate thread.

The file sizes are sometimes large (~500KB), so for some people they may take time to load in.
